In Social Psychology, there are six principles of compliance that describe the tactics people use to persuade or influence others. Also referred to as Cialdini’s six weapons of influence, these six approaches include reciprocation, commitment and consistency, social proof, friendship/liking, authority, and scarcity. Of course, one can find examples of these persuasive techniques in everyday life situations. However, if there is a single location where one can find examples of these principles occurring at the same time, it would be at farmer’s market. This past Sunday, I visited the Chattanooga Farmer’s Market peach festival celebration. While I was there, I noticed there were many different venders attempting to sell their products. Each†¦show more content†¦He also asked me if I liked each sauce, and asked for my thoughts about how each sauce tasted. Naturally, since I love hot sauce, I agreed that all the sauces were delicious. Since I agreed to tasti ng each sample and giving positive feedback I made it seem as though I was committed to the position that supported the notion that each sauce was excellent. That would have made it more likely for me to buy a full bottle of at least one sauce. This vendor also used the foot-in-the-door technique in that he had me agree to a small request (sampling hot sauce), and then presented me with a larger request when he asked me if I would like to buy a full bottle. After this encounter, I was very convinced to buy a bottle, but I did not do so. This was because I did not need hot sauce and I wanted to spend my money on other things. However, if I had the extra money, I would have bought the hot sauce. Scarcity The next vendor I stopped at was selling dog collars and leashes. I ended up buying a faux Gucci dog collar for my dog because the vender used the principle of scarcity to convince me to buy the collar. Initially, I approached the second booth with the intention of buying a cheaper, more basic dog collar with no design. Then, when I encountered the fake Gucci dog collar, I was amused and thought it was cool. Despite that nowadays the education is termed to be â€Å"child-centered† and is eager to meet innovations both in methods of teaching and in the philosophy of contemporary school, there are individuals who ,according to their conservative views on the problem ,are stick to the point that traditional system of education is far superior to the new, progressive one. What is progressive education? During most of the twentieth century, the term progressive education has been used to describe ideas and practices that aim to make schools more effective institutions of a democratic society. In a progressive educational environment, each child is honored and celebrated and the teacher-learner relationship is considered to be extremely important. Progressive education is characterized by a whole-child orientation: cognitive, social, and emotional development of each student are considered the key to students’ educational growth. It seems to me it gives an opportunity to construct their own learning, build their own understanding, and integrate skills, information, and concepts. In progressive education, ethics and morality are explicit parts of a curriculum. The learning atmosphere is characterized by low anxiety and high challenge: students are met where they are and moved towards who they are to be. How does traditional education differ from progressive education? In my mind the main difference between these two educational systems is that traditional education is teacher-centered where the teacher-learner relationship is irrelevant. Each child is treated in the same way and students are assumed to be equally ready to learn the prescribed content. Besides, individual differences are ignored. What is more, students are grouped by their abilities and achievements and learning is prescribed by standardized measures of evaluation. In a traditional educational environment, students compete against each other ;they have few choices of what classes to take and even fewer choices to demonstrate their mastery in a given class. In addition , a general approach to the process of education is different. The supporters of progressive methods want to stick as much as possible to a natural model of teaching. They want to avoid anything they perceive to be artificial, anything imposed on the child. Students should learn as naturally as possible. This means fewer rules, more â€Å"hands-on† experience, less explicit instruction, more learning by inference and discovery in a real-world environment. Students should work at their own pace, and shouldnt be subjected to tests. If to speak about me, I should say I support progressive education. To my mind it has far more opportunities to bring up an all-round personality. In the most extreme schools of this experimental group there were no teachers at all; adults simply acted as facilitators or guides for childrens explorations. After four years in experimental schools these students were compared with a control group of 500 students from conventional schools. It could be noted that Navarre did not directly criticize the seemingly lack of sexual morality in her characters. The servant was her mouthpiece to point out the fact that Du Mesnil had no moral sexuality in pursuing her mistress. He was described as 'good-looking' and decidedly capable of finding suitable, eligible love interests. Since he chose to indulge in a married woman, he was partly responsible for the treatment he received when he had no access to his married lover. Du Mesnil had been made the comic fool by his persistent trust in the woman. He fell into her trap and was slain by St. Aignan's servants. It was funny how the wronged and weak brought destruction upon themselves. Navarre used a combination of dialogue and narrative to show showed how gullible Du Mesnil was; 'Off he went, never dreaming that she was planning to trap him, while she took his servant back to her house and gave him some supper.' (Navarre 73). It was not a surprise that the woman who lacked sexual morality was also lacking in moral scruples. The weak St. Aignan made a fool of himself when we read that he showed off his pretended valor when; 'he thrust his dagger a dozen or so times into the body of the man on whom he would never have dared lay a finger had he been alive.' (Navarre 74). St. Aignan made a comical figure with his false bravery. It was a critique on the weak huaband who could not comment nor do anything on his wife's moral sexuality while his Du Mesnil was alive. It was comical how events did not turn out the way the characters planned them. St. Aignan planned to get rid of his wife. Navarre's narration said that he made a wax doll to cast a spell of ill will on her because he felt that; 'It was she who was at the bottom of all this trouble, and he was quite certain she would never renounce her wicked ways.' (Navarre 77). He had no sexual morality because he did not want to preserve the sexual relations that bond him to his wife. The same could be said about the woman. She wanted to rid herself of the restriction that imposed sexual morality on her so she devised her own measures to save her skin while condemning her husband. Although she did get past criminal jurisdiction for her wickedness, she did not enjoy a good life thereafter. At the end of the story, Navarre revealed that the story teller was Simontaut, whose objective was to chastise women who lacked sexual morality. Navarre incorporated the critique on sexual morality in the form of a witty exchange amongst her story tellers, Simontaut, Parlamente and Oisille. Sinc e this story was a moral condemnation of a woman's marital infidelity, Navarre had set the stage for the next story teller, Oisille, who said she was compelled to tell a story to contrast with this and redeem the virtues of good women with good sexual morality. (Navarre 71-78).
