Three branches of the U.S. government - Essay Example The U.S. government has three branches: the legislative, the executive, and the judiciary, each performing independently various function that support the functioning of the government. The three branches work independently.Consequently, the singular purpose of having the three branches working separately is to promise that they do not become too powerful to infringe on the freedoms of the population. In analyzing the three branches of the government, we see that all of their functions serve the public differently, and some branches seem to have more power than others in affecting the work of the government. Hence, this essay discusses the legislature because it has done and is doing a lot for the people of the United State (Trueman, 2000). The legislature is comprised of the bicameral Congress, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. The two houses are tasked with many functions, but their main purpose is to make legislative laws. The Senate is the upper house with each state represented by two senators in it. The House of Representatives represents the lower house and has a number of elected members proportionate to the population of a state. The Senate has one hundred seats and allows elected members to serve for a six-year term. However, the House of Representatives has a bigger number of members, and currently there are 435 members serving for a two-year term. The House of Representatives and the Senate have almost similar functions, but they also have specific responsibilities and powers. In addition, the two chambers work parallelly to each other in passing the bills that originate from either the Senate or the House of Representative (Wilson, Dilulio, & Bose, 2009). The legislative branch has many functions, but law making is its key function. The executive branch implements and enforces the law, whereas the judiciary branch interprets them. Hence, in serving the people, the legislative branch has the most power given that it is the one that delib erates on the bill that later becomes a law. The input of bills in addressing the challenges people encounter in their daily activities acknowledges the work of the Congress for the benefit of the Americans. Therefore, their service to the people supersedes the enforcing and elucidation of the executive and the judiciary branches. Furthermore, the legislative branch consists of elected members, and thus it represents the heart of representative democracy. When the law makers make laws, they do so in a democratic manner to meet the public interests and to ensure they are upheld (Wilson et al., 2009). In addition to making laws, the legislature has other non-legislative powers and responsibilities. These functions are not in any way related to the legislation of laws. One of the non-legislation powers of the Congress are the electoral powers. The electoral powers are only exercised when the electoral process fails to determine the results of a presidential election. The House of Repre sentatives is privileged to elect the president in cases where no candidate gains a majority Electoral College. On the other hand, the Senate is responsible for electing vice president in case no presidential candidate has enough Electoral College to ensure the victory of his nominee to the position of a vice president (Wilson et al., 2009). The legislative branch also has the non-legislative power of impeachment. The House of Representatives has the power to impeach federal government officials who are deemed to have bribed, committed high crimes, misdemeanors, and treason. While the House has the powers to impeach, the Senate acts as the judge and jury. Genetically modified organism Essay In 1994, the first genetically modified food was tested and sold out into the market. Since then, over 35 countries and establishments from all around the world have started producing genetically modified foods. Genetically modified foods should be permitted because of it’s health benefits and advantages to the economy. Genetically modified foods, also known as engineered foods and biotech foods, are foods whose DNA has been modified in ways that do not naturally occur. Scientists tweak the DNA of the food by collaborating it with genes from a different organism, which gives the manufacturer all control over the plants genetic structure. Most of the genetically modified foods are from plants such as potatoes, corn, rice and even salmon. Animal feed, is also made up of crops such as soybeans, which are almost all genetically modified, meaning the food we eat from animals such as cows and chickens, are all being fed genetically modified foods, which then passes down to the meat they produce. There are a variety of reasons to why people have started genetically modifying food. To begin, it can enhance the taste of food; it increases the nutrients and also prevents pesticides and diseases. It is also a beneficial factor for the producers and the consumers as they can both save money since genetically modified foods are cheaper and most importantly since they last longer, making this an economic benefit. Although all the benefits it provides, a lot of harm comes with it. The way GM foods are engineered, is by taking a gene out of one organism and placing it into another, which disturbs the plants natural DNA. This factor kills off normal cells and provides the plant with the chemicals that scientist have injected into the plants for them to be able to last longer. Lastly, this action introduces allergens and toxins to food. The only ones to benefit from GM foods are multinational biotech companies and GM food consumers. To begin, it is economically beneficial for biotech companies because they are able to grow more crops that would last longer than a naturally grown crop. An example of this would be a potato. A naturally grown potato could last up to 3 weeks without being destroyed, in comparison to the genetically modified potato, which could last up to 7 weeks without being destroyed. Meaning this could benefit both the producers and the consumers because the fruits and vegetables that are being modified have longer shelf lives making the consumer save money and benefit from the bought products. Following its long life ability, genetically modified foods improve the availability of food for the world. As it lasts longer and cost cheaper than organic products, it improves the availability of food for the world by only producing so much at a time. Instead of producing 5 organic potatoes that will die off in 3 weeks, genetically modified potatoes are grown and will last 7 weeks, making us save potato seeds, which save more food for later increasing the worlds food supply. As GM foods are increasing the world’s food supply, they also provide an additional amount of nutrients chemically made. Genetically modified foods are modified to have more nutrients in it than the original food would have. Golden Rice, for example, is claimed to be â€Å"fortified† with vitamin A, which is an essential vitamin for the human body, which is provided by GM Golden Rice. There have been a great number of studies tracking the effects of GMOs on animals. Overwhelmingly, these studies indicate that GMOs are safe to consume. Impact on farming, GMOs allows plants to be modified to grow in environments that would be normally inhospitable. Cheaper food means, easier farming means more food, which, in turn, means less expensive food. This is not only beneficial for the average consumer, but it can have global implications: less expensive food makes it easier to feed hungry populations around the world. Increased nutritional value GMOs can be modified to have greater nutritional value than the organism would have naturally. For example, scientists, hoping to eliminate the need for post-harvest processing, have genetically modified rice to contain significantly higher amounts of vitamin A. However, Ellen, the main character and protagonist of the novel Ellen Foster, exemplifies a substantial amount of independence and mature, rational thought as a ten-year-old girl. The recent death of her mother sends her on a quest for the ideal family, or anywhere her father, who had shown apathy to both she and her fragile mother, was not. Kaye Gibbons’ use of simple diction, unmarked dialogue, and a unique story structure in her first novel, Ellen Foster, allows the reader to explore the emotions and thoughts of this heroic, ten-year-old girl modeled after Gibbons’ own experiences as a young girl. Kaye Gibbons’ experiences as a child are the foundations for this breathtaking saga of a young girl’s tragic memories of her childhood. Children and young people in their life development pass through various stages that have mental problems. Some of these problems result from self-assessment about life. Parents create drug-free environment if they act as role models by not engaging in drug abuse. It will be very hard to convince a young person to refrain from drugs if you abuse drugs. In the case of Ben, his parents need to embrace a systematic psychology therapy to make him avoid being involved in drug abuse by acting as role models to him. Central to the cognitive view of people is the idea that they are actively trying to make sense of their environment by imposing order and meaning in the things they encounter. The usefulness of integrating cognitive behavioural, systematic and creative approaches in working with Ben to build a coherent intervention has a great contribution in improving his life. An Indiana supermarket has started the next trend in do-it-yourself grocery shopping – allowing customers not only to check themselves out. But also to let themselves in. On Thanksgiving night in Goshen, the locking mechanism on its front door was not checked by someone at the store. That resulted in a dozen customers entering the store and trying to shop despite a complete absence of store employees. Normally open 24 hours a day, the doors of the store were shut at 6 p. m. on Thanksgiving evening. Store manager, Sheila Donley, said. It seems the locks on the front doors must have failed, and instead of actually sleeping off their turkey dinners or getting an early head start on Black Friday, some loyal Kroger customers decided to pick up a few extra items. † Since the locking mechanism had failed the doors were not easy to slide open, Donley said, that may have deterred others who came earlier in the evening. About 10:15 p. m. , though, one customer decided the store lo oked open. And pulled the sliding front doors apart just as several other shoppers arrived. When I arrived at the store I could see a little space between the doors, because all the lights were on inside, I just assumed the automatic opener had stopped working but I could still shop,† said, Goshen resident, Bill Terrell. â€Å"I looked for an employee to alert, I found no one and decided just to buy what I needed. † Several other late-night shoppers gathered items and went to the self-checkout lanes, seemingly oblivious to the utter lack of employees. They realized something was wrong after seeing all registers closed, Terrell said. At some point, police were called.Puzzled by the situation, a call came from a customer or a neighbor concerned about the sudden activity. Love in Oceania essays Winston Smith lives in Oceania. Oceania is the utopian vision of Big Brother and the Inner Party. The year is 1984 and Winstons world is made up of telescreens and thought police. At any given moment in time he is being watched. Despite all of this he is lonely. He desires someone to talk to and someone to love. Winstons love interests in 1984 vary from Julia, O'Brien, to Big Brother. The concept of love in Oceania is controlled and perceived in a frightening manner. The daily loneliness is very difficult for Winston. He begins a diary knowing he will be caught. This seems trivial to him. There is little that makes him happy in life and the consequences of his diary seem unimportant. This all changes when he is given a slip of paper with three simple words on it, I love you. Their love affair gave Winston something to live for. He felt a sort of purpose in loving Julia. He satisfied his human urge to talk to someone and to be affectionate with another human being. Sex was also purposeful. Sexual intercourse was almost forbidden. Sex and love were to never be intertwined. Orgasms were practically illegal and promiscuity even worse. Winston felt that his love for Julia and their lovemaking was a rebellious act against the Inner Party and Big Brother. Winston became a much happier character after he began his relationship with Julia. He appreciated life and times he could sneak away to be with her. For a short while he stopped writ ing in his diary for fear of death; he wished to live for Julia and their love. Winston feels and affinity with his superior, O'Brien. There is a love affair on Winstons part to OBrien. OBrien is the father figure missing from Winstons past. He is the protector and the savior of Winston. Changes in Roger Chillingsworth essays In the novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter, there is a character by the name of Roger Prynne. He changes in the many different ways. His changes are physical, moral, and spiritual. Roger Prynne changes physically over the course of the book. First of all he changes his name. He is the Roger Prynne and changes to Roger Chillingworth to hide form the shame of being Hesters husband. He also changes his physical appearance. Before the book starts he is a well-dressed scholar form Amsterdam. Then at his first appearance in the book he is very wild looking with wild dress from living with Indians. Third of all, his expression changes. At the beginning he has a look of calm intelligence. Now his face has become somewhat ugly and evil looking. Secondly Chillingworth changes morally. Before he enters Boston he is a very caring, selfless man. Then, as he sees his wife holding a baby, not his own, standing on a scaffold, his attitude changes to one of revenge. As the novel comes towards the en, it appears Chillingworth has transformed into a devil. He has become someone who is to the point of being selfish to the extreme, willing to surrender his fellow man to delight his own desires. Last of all Roger Chillingworth changes spiritually. Although he does not go from good to bad, the sins committed do change. In the beginning it seems as if he is the one being sinned against, being shipwrecked, captured by Indians, and then entering Boston and finding his wife holding a baby that is not his. In truth, he has committed sin first. His first sin is marrying a young and passionate Hester, knowing she does not love him and he cannot be to her the type of husband she needs.
